Running a small business while being a mom is no small feat. You’re a master juggler, a creative powerhouse, AND a superhero in disguise. That’s all amazing – but even superheroes need a strategy and an end goal. That’s why I’m breaking down something that every small business owner needs to transform your mompreneur dreams into a reality, all powered by the magic of goal setting.

A Firm Foundation: Why strategic planning matters

Before we jump into the nitty-gritty, let’s talk about the importance of a strong foundation. You know the old parable about the foolish man who built his house on the sand and the wise man who built his house upon the rock? Well, when the floods came the foolish man’s house was destroyed, but the wise man’s house stood firm. The same is true with business. A well-crafted strategic business plan is your roadmap to success. It outlines your visions, goals, and strategies for achieving them. Think of it as your personal GPS guiding you through your journey of building a thriving small business.

Your secret weapon? Goal setting.

Yes, that’s right. It sounds so easy, doesn’t it? But without clear goals, you’re really just throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping success sticks somewhere. Setting clear, smart goals helps you:

  • Focus your energy: as a busy mompreneur, your time is precious. Setting clear goals lets you prioritize tasks and projects that move you closer to your business aspirations.
  • Celebrate milestones: Let’s be real for a moment. Big goals can be overwhelming. By breaking them down into smaller, more achievable steps allows you to celebrate victories along the way. Every milestone you reach is a win, and winning helps keep you motivated and energized.
  • Track your progress: Along with milestones, seeing your progress is incredibly motivating! Goal setting lets you see just how far you’ve come and keeps you inspired and focused.
  • Create work-life balance: Self-care can get pushed to the back burner for mompreneurs (well, for moms in general, really). Including work-life balance goals helps ensure that you’re taking care of yourself and your family. A rested and happy mama is a productive mama!

Vision & Planning: Charting Your Course

Just like any great adventure, your business journey starts with a clear destination in mind. This section helps you define your overall vision – what do you want your business to become? What impact do you want to make? Who do you want to serve? Having a strong vision keeps you motivated and focused, especially when things get tough.

Dig deep to unearth your goals

Before you can reach your destination, you need a map of how you’re going to get there. This map might look a little bit different than the one you’re used to seeing on your GPS! It includes turns like Marketing, PR & Sales, Products/Services, Financial Goals, and Networking, among others. Just making one turn isn’t going to help you reach that overall vision. You need to follow the entire map to get there.

It’s also important when you’re mapping out your goals that you decide when you’ll arrive by, keep in mind the roadblocks you might run into and make a plan for how you are going to reach that particular stop.

Grab a pen and start brainstorming

Doing a good old fashioned brain dump is a great way to get ideas flushed out. Some topics that you can brainstorm about that I include in my FREE Business Goals for Mompreneurs workbook are why you’re a better choice for your customers than your competitors, marketing techniques to try, new products/services to launch, and hiring needs to make sure the trip runs smoothly.

Building a successful small business or side hustle DOESN’T have to be overwhelming!

Just draw out your map, and follow the directions you’ve given yourself. Also, be sure to ask for help! One of the best things I ever did for my business was signing up for the free E-Printables Side Hustle workshop by Gold City Ventures. Regardless of my big aspirations for my own side hustle, I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. It was the spaghetti at the wall thing again. Signing up for that course helped give me the tools I needed to be successful, and eventually led me right here!

You can click on the link to sign up for the free workshop if you’re curious, or you can hop on over to my post on how easily you can make money selling digital products with NO experience to find out more.

    In the meantime, happy travels!
